What should I expect on my first visit?

Your first visit will take an hour with follow-up appointments taking 30 minutes.
The first consultation will involve a full medical history in which you will be asked all about your current symptoms and what aggravates and relieves them, the treatment if any that you have received so far, the medical history of your close family members, your diet, exercise, sleeping patterns and any other relevant questions. You will also normally be asked to undress to your underwear in order for the osteopath to carry out accurate examinations and assessments; if you don’t feel comfortable with this and would like to bring a friend or family member with you that is fine.

You will usually be examined standing, sitting and lying down. The Osteopath uses his developed sense of touch to assess areas of weakness and tenderness, movement, tone and general tissue health. If Osteopathic treatment is deemed appropriate the Osteopath will give you a diagnosis and an intended treatment plan. The Osteopath will then use a variety of different techniques tailored to your specific requirements - such as soft tissue massage, deep friction massage, muscle energy techniques, gentle joint articulation and sometimes a thrust technique will be used where the patient may hear an audible click or pop to increase joint range of movement. Advice such as exercise and stretching may also be given.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments needed varies from individual to individual. Normally you are recommended to receive treatments once a week to start with so progress can be monitored. As symptoms improve the treatments can be spread out accordingly.
Some patients respond very quickly and only need one or two treatments, where as other patients are more chronic so can be more of a lengthier process back to health.
